CHARACTER
Character Name: Alphys
Age: ???? Mid-twenties???
Species: Monster (but kind of looks like a yellow lizard thing)
Canon: Undertale
Canon Point: Neutral route that ends with King Mettaton. Toriel, Asgore, and Undyne are dead.
Character Info: Alphys on the Undertale wiki!
Personality:
NERD.

Alphys is the picture perfect example of a stereotypical nerd. Huge glasses, buck teeth, stammers when she speaks, binge watches anime, lives off ramen, spends all her spare time on the internet, the works. However, there's a lot more to her than just being a total weeb. She's the royal scientist, in charge of discovering a way to break the barrier and free all of monsterkind from the underground. By the time Frisk meets her, she's already accomplished a lot, though because of Reasons she doesn't talk about most of them.

Alphys is incredibly passionate about the things she's into. As Undyne puts it, "It doesn't matter what it is! YOU CARE ABOUT IT!!" This becomes hilariously obvious if you tell her you want to watch anime with her- she immediately launches into a huge spiel about her favorite TV show, talking so fast that the game's dialogue boxes can't even keep up with her. It's evident in her work as a scientist, too. Not just anyone could bring dead/dying monsters back to life, even if it doesn't turn out exactly the way she expected it to. Her elaborate set-up in Hotland is another example- she rigged the entire area just so she could play out her fantasy of being Frisk's big damn hero.

Despite her awkwardness, this makes her an excellent friend! She'll know all of your likes and dislikes and plan accordingly to make you happy. When Frisk "dates" her, it's clear she's been paying attention to the things that Undyne likes, as all of her gifts are tailored to her favorite fish. She's incredibly eager to please and she'll do anything for you if it means you'll like her. Unfortunately, the things she does aren't always good

You see, Alphys lies. Alphys lies a lot. She wants Undyne to think she's cool and not an otaku loser, so she tells her that anime and manga are actually records of human history, which of course makes her an expert on it!! She wants to be part of Frisk's adventure, so she constructs an elaborate fabrication to make her look like the hero saving them from Mettaton, the evil killer robot!! It's important to note that she's not doing it because she's mean and wants to hurt people (even though she definitely put Frisk in a LOT of danger, whether she realizes it or not), but more out of a desire to preserve her own self image. If anything, she's just selfish and desperate for approval.

Because she hates herself.

She dolls up her self-loathing with humor and irony, such as taking a picture of her wastebasket, adding a pink, sparkly filter, and tagging it #selfie. It's her way of playing it up as some big joke and making herself look flippant about it, so that no one suspects just how much she hates herself. After all, she can't have anyone actually worrying about her well-being, because she doesn't deserve that. By the time Frisk meets her in person, she's incredibly depressed and barely holding it together. Part of the reason she throws herself into "helping" them as much as she does is because they have no idea who she is and what she's done, so she can make a good impression and they'll like her. It's hinted that she even has suicidal tendencies. Undyne, retelling the story of how they met, mentions that she found her in the garbage dump, sitting at the edge of the bottomless pit and looking contemplative, and when she meets Frisk in the true lab, she did not expect to find them there, implying that their presence stopped her from doing... something.

On top of the lying and depression, Alphys also has major, major avoidance issues. She doesn't know how to deal with conflict at all, so she goes out of her way not to, even if that requires infinitely more effort. When Mettaton starts becoming more famous and spends less time with her as a result, Alphys doesn't confront him, she just writes mopey livejournal entries about it. With the amalgamates, she couldn't bring herself to deal with the potential fallout of the families and Asgore finding out that she ruined everything, especially since literally the day before she told them all everything worked out okay. Instead, she just clammed up. She stopped answering phone calls and tossed letters in the trash. And the more she avoided them, the angrier and more frantic they got, as monsters desperately wanted to know what became of the loved ones that they put in her care. Of course, things escalating was just a sign that she really shouldn't tell anyone, so she buckled down even harder, essentially becoming a recluse. Bratty and Catty both comment on this, saying they haven't seen her in a while.

If she were coming from the pacifist ending, she would have started working on her issues and would have a support system of friends to help her crawl her way out of the pit of self-loathing she dug for herself. Unfortunately, she's coming from the King Mettaton neutral ending, which is easily the worst ending for Alphys. Even in the genocide, or aborted genocide routes, Alphys goes through some Character Development(tm) and becomes a better monster as a result. In this route, however? Life goes on for most of the monsters, but Alphys is left alone and still hiding her terrible secret. Undyne and Asgore are dead, and she's convinced herself that Mettaton wants nothing to do with her now that he's hit it big. It's implied that in this ending, she succumbs to her despair and either runs away at best or throws herself down the waterfall at worst. Safe to say, she's not in a good place if this ending happens.

Abilities:

Magic?: Alphys is the only main character in the game that you never get to fight directly, you only face her as a Lost Soul in the true final battle. Her attacks are exactly the same as Mettaton's, which implies that she has electricity-based magic. She doesn't seem to use it much.

SCIENCE!!: She may not admit it, but she was tapped to be royal scientist for a reason. Robotics, bio-engineering, the very nature of SOULs- Alphys is an expert in many fields. Although her play at being Frisk's mission control turns out to be a carefully constructed farce, it's still impressive that she's able to manipulate all that machinery on her own, on top of all the things she's built. She could take a box of scraps and turn it into a super suit if she were so inclined. There's no crazy invention that's out of her league.

Weeb: She's managed to live off a diet of instant noodles and junk food and hasn't died yet, that has to count for something.

CARNIVAL
Soul Colour: Yellow SOUL
Ideal Jobs: Repairman, Lighting/SFX tech, Nurse, Janitor
Relevant Experience:

Repairman/Lighting/SFX tech: Alphys is a whiz when it comes to robotics and machines. The things she does throughout the game border on straight up crazy awesome, from building a robot that can house a SOUL to a cell phone that turns into a jetpack. She has an elaborate system of security cameras set up throughout the entire underground. She's a mad scientist minus the megalovmania.

Nurse: In addition to her extensive knowledge of robotics, Alphys is very knowledgeable about monster biology. Granted, she majorly botched her one big experiment with monster physiology, but in her defense, she was asked to essentially bring the dead back to life, and that's a pretty tall order even for her. It still stands to reason she could handle applying bandages or doling out medication at least.

Janitor: She spends a lot of time in the garbage dump and considers it to be her element ok I admit it this is a joke entry

Reason for Joining: Please get me out of here.

With Undyne and Asgore dead, the human escaped forever, the six SOULs missing, and Mettaton turning the Underground into his own personal playground, Alphys had never felt more abandoned and alone. The only 'friend' she had who was still alive had no time for her anymore, and she certainly couldn't tell anyone about the True Lab at this point. She could either hide in her lab forever, or she could leave.

She could find another place, even deeper under ground, where no one would ever find her, and send her letters asking about their family members. Maybe now would be a good time to find out what's at the bottom of the waterfall.

But upon coming to the garbage dump, she finds a lush forest instead, and parting the foliage reveals the carnival. It doesn't take long for her to figure out that the carnival is staffed by people who've been picked up along the way. This was her ticket out of here! She could escape the Underground, and she'd be among people who had no idea about what she'd done. She briefly- very briefly- considers asking the Ringmaster if she can heal the amalgamates. Ultimately, though, she chickens out. The idea of anyone here knowing what she did is just too much for her. She wants- no, NEEDS a fresh start, and that means leaving all her baggage behind, for better or for worse.

...Now if only she could shake that lingering guilt.
